Each side stakes out a position, defends it, makes minimal concessions. Tends to produce mediocre agreements, damages the relationship, and obscures the actual interests at stake. The thing 'principled negotiation' is positioned against. Often unavoidable in adversarial contexts (litigation), but usually the wrong default.
