Kubernetes Up and Running book

Practical introduction to Kubernetes from people who built it. 3rd edition is current.

Burns, Beda, Hightower, Evenson · 2022 · platform

Practical introduction to Kubernetes from people who built it. 3rd edition is current.

why it matters

If you have to operate or deploy on Kubernetes (most platform-shaped jobs do), this is the most efficient way to learn it. Doesn't try to make you a contributor — just a competent user. The mental model it builds (declarative, reconciliation loops, controllers) generalizes to most modern infra.

key ideas

  • Declarative state + reconciliation loop is the core abstraction; everything else is a specialization
  • Pods, services, deployments, configmaps, secrets — minimal vocabulary that covers most workloads
  • Operators extend k8s by adding new resources + reconciliation loops
  • Networking and storage are the hard parts; security comes after that

who should read it

Anyone who has to deploy on or operate Kubernetes. Read this before you read advanced k8s material; otherwise you're reading without the foundation.
