Kubernetes Up and Running book
Practical introduction to Kubernetes from people who built it. 3rd edition is current.
Practical introduction to Kubernetes from people who built it. 3rd edition is current.
why it matters
If you have to operate or deploy on Kubernetes (most platform-shaped jobs do), this is the most efficient way to learn it. Doesn't try to make you a contributor — just a competent user. The mental model it builds (declarative, reconciliation loops, controllers) generalizes to most modern infra.
key ideas
- Declarative state + reconciliation loop is the core abstraction; everything else is a specialization
- Pods, services, deployments, configmaps, secrets — minimal vocabulary that covers most workloads
- Operators extend k8s by adding new resources + reconciliation loops
- Networking and storage are the hard parts; security comes after that
who should read it
Anyone who has to deploy on or operate Kubernetes. Read this before you read advanced k8s material; otherwise you're reading without the foundation.
